Sadly the adoption process is an expensive one. Despite the large number of children who need secure and happy homes and despite the number of prospective parents, it seems that the two are separated by the huge chasm of finance. This is especially true in the current economic climate and perhaps more so for those employed by the state – who are on notoriously low incomes. With the raised awareness of the expensive nature of adoption however, especially internationally, various individuals and organizations have worked to make financial aid for the adoption process an easier, more accessible option.

Adoption grants for teachers are a special case: an educator is surely one of the most important contributors to society. Unfortunately, they are not always given the recognition or respect that should accompany that role. But it is likely that a professional teacher would be well-suited to adopting a child, notwithstanding the expense involved – thus the need for an adoption grant for teachers. The advantage of a grant rather than a loan is that, generally speaking, a grant need not be repaid. Although some agencies may ask that a donation is made to their on-going work.

Recently, it seems that many states are offering their employees substantial reimbursements of funds associated with adopting. There are also a number of government agencies who have begun to provide adoption benefits to employees. These may include help with legal expenses and agency fees, counseling, paid or unpaid leave – akin to maternity leave – and provision of information regarding adoption (http://www.adoption.com/)and referral services. It is therefore imperative that a teacher seeking to adopt and researching adoption grants for teachers should ask their employer about any provision they may have and their policy in this area.

Obviously the number of people applying for grants will far outweigh the amount of funds available. As such, it is important to prepare your case thoroughly before going through the application process. Make sure that you have all the information available regarding your own efforts to finance your planned adoption. Do not allow the application process to overwhelm you. Ensure that all forms are completed fully and honestly, provide all the necessary documentation including references.

It is a good idea to have already gone through the home study required by all adoption agencies – a positive home study is one small step to adoption and to receive an adoption grant for teachers. A home study will help you show the grant providers and the adoption agency that you are capable of providing a stable home environment for a prospective child. You will also need to show clearly the financial obstacles you face whilst going through the adoption process and why, as a teacher, you need an adoption grant. It is important to be able to show that despite the financial difficulties caused by the adoption process you are, nevertheless, able to provide a safe and stable home for any child. It may be that you feel the grant application process is somewhat intrusive, but it is important to remember the bigger picture and the end result.

My husband and I have been through two failed cycles of IVF, and we are now looking toward adoption to add to our family. Please inform us about any possible options that we have available to us.
